Games library project : L’Espace Jeux
Goals
As part of the 2nd year of the Master in Multimedia and Multilingual Communication (CAWEB), I chose to create a website introducing the Espace Jeux, a games library located in Lauterbourg (67630), and all its activities. I offered to create this website for free, for the benefit of Julien Bellot, the manager.
Requirements
The site was expected to be functional, meet all security and accessibility standards, be mobile-friendly and SEO-friendly. It also had to be translated or to include an easy-to-use translation solution to translate into English and German.
The site was created within the framework of one of the courses of the Master 2 in Multimedia and Multilingual Communication (CAWEB) at the University of Strasbourg.
The MoSCoW method was specifically applied to define the scope of this project.
Client’s specific needs and possible solutions
- A simple website, with easy to find information.
The solution proposed was to have each mega menu entry associated with one page. Sub-menu items then act as anchors, so visitors don’t have to scroll through the page. Visitors click on the title of a submenu and go directly to the corresponding section on the page.
- The website had to be easy to update, take over and manage.
One of the solutions was to use a site builder (like Elementor or Divi) and create templates when building each page so that the client could recycle existing templates for future contributions.
Different steps of the project
- Selecting the appropriate web hosting solution
- Purchasing the domain name
- Selecting and setting up the appropriate CMS (WordPress)
- Selecting a WordPress theme: ExS by exstheme (allows flexible logo layout, 100% Google Page and LightHouse speed, extra-compact CSS and JS files, no dependency on plugins, unlimited customization options, valid and search engine optimized code, 100% mobile compatibility, modern CSS technologies, CSS flexbox, CSS grid, works with all page builders such as Elementor, Beaver Builder, WPBackery, Brizy etc.)
- Defining a graphic charter
- Building a fun, modern and playful atmosphere: graphic design, UX, and language elements to target adults, board game enthusiasts or the curious.
- Creating and implementing all the content in French
- Creating a blog and articles
- Working on the SEO in order to promote the game library, attract volunteers, partners and potential sponsors.
- Translating and localizing all content into English (with the Polylang plugin)
- Translating and localizing all content into German (with the Polylang plugin and the help of a volunteer from the association)
- Improving both the quality and the diversity of the photos displayed on the site (to enhance the premises and board games)
- Responsive design
- Accessibility: respect of the RGAA and W3C standards
- Security: secure access to the back-office, SSL certificate, clear legal notice (general conditions) & RGPD compliance
- Advice list to improve the project and develop monetization.
- Client training and production of a handover guide.
